Here's the thing folks, weeds and walleyes go together like peanut butter and jelly. As many of you know, Clear Lake has been over taken by milfoil and curly leak pondweed. As walleye anglers we have a couple choices, avoid them or become one with the weeds. Personally I've learned to love the weeds. Whether you have forward facing sonar, traditional 2D sonar, or anything in between , you can locate these weedy areas. Here's my hot take on tactics to catch these weed walleyes. Most effective is with Forward facing sonar. Scan edges and pockets, hunting for either individual walleyes or small "wolf packs" of 3-5 fish. Use the lightest jig possible tipped with either a night crawler, leach or a plastic. I have been incredibly successful in all weather conditions and all times of day using this method. A deadly second is slip bobbers and leaches. This is hands down the best technique for anglers without forward facing sonar. if there is fish holding in the area, the results are almost immediate. Lastly, pulling spinner rigs on the edges will yield some walleyes. The weeds are your best bet for Clear Lake walleyes headed into the weekend.
